about

South African producer Mxshi Mo drops another round of experimental gqom with Somewhere on Earth, a dark and organic EP on the edge of reality.

For Mxshi Mo, Somewhere on Earth is a statement that somewhere on this planet, there is an artist based in Pietermaritzburg who produces unique music, despite the criminal and violent reputation of his city. A few kilometers away from Durban, the cradle of gqom, Nkanyiso Shoba offers a dark and minimalist interpretation of the genre, far from current standards. Suffering from retinal pigmentation, a rare syndrome that impairs his night vision, Mxshi Mo unfortunately cannot perform in a club, a handicap that does not prevent him from firing straight when it comes to producing dance music calibrated for sound systems. A self-taught producer, Mxshi Mo learned the secrets of electronic music by manipulating softwares, exploring Youtube and reading magazines. He grew up listening to techno, kwaito and deep house, and describes his style as a mutant gqom inspired by afro-tech and trap.
With his unique style, he earned a passage on the English label More Time Records - a reference in terms of actual club music - and notable collaborations with Scratcha DVA, Ahadadream and more recently Obeka. After a few self- produced EPs, Mxshi Mo feeds Radio Chiguiro's catalog with three striking titles.

Like a bulldozer, the eerie "Mount Nowhere" stands out with its heavy bassline and textured atmosphere. Then, we drift onto “Rebirth,” an intimidating soundtrack of an imaginary horror film, which rises the tension of the EP to its climax. More centered on percussion, the single "Jungle Fever" is inspired by the ritual ceremonies that most African tribes practice to connect with their ancestors, projecting the listener in the middle of an enchanted forest, in a parallel dimension.
